On Wedensday, April 13th, HuSArctic organized a meeting with various stakeholders from the Lapland region. The aim of the meeting was to have an informal discussion on how current developments may influence individual or community well-being in the region. Participants were representing diverse groups such as the mining sector, Sámi people, reindeer herders, public administration, or tourism sector.
The meeting induced a lively and fruitful discussion amongst the different stakeholders, elaborating on lessons to be learned from other interest groups, but which also revealed potentials for conflicts. While some fears and challenges of some groups have been brought up, it was also elaborated how more cooperation and stronger dialogues could decrease potential tension or even lead to cooperation in the benefit of all groups with potentially competing interests.
Due to the success of the meeting we are looking forward to keep up the cooperation with the stakeholders and to continue the dialogue and discussions. As from our side as researchers we gained valuable insights on threats and opportunities of different stakeholders in Lapland.
